Located in the far south of Bahia, Caraiva is a beach paradise that’s been relatively unspoiled by tourist crowds. A community of litoraneos and ribeirinhas, Cariva is the perfect place to disconnect from the world, explore the stunning nature surrounding it or simply relax on the deserted beaches under a starry sky.
It’s no wonder that Caraiva has become a popular destination for travelers from all over Brazil. The region’s first settlement was established in the 15th century and its residents still live entirely off-grid, even as the Monte Pascoal Historical National Park (created in 1961) encroaches on their territory. Caraiva is a truly unique place that’s been described as a ‘Republic of Taxi caraiva’ by its inhabitants, as they dance to their own rhythm and prefer to keep their distance from other tourists.
As with all remote beaches in Brazil, the sand dunes are full of wild life, including birds and reptiles that call it home. The sand itself is incredibly fine, with some of the best and most diverse colors in all of Brazil. Caraiva also boasts a river, a lagoon and a beautiful waterfall that’s great for swimming.
The people who run this pousada beira mar go out of their way to ensure that visitors have a fantastic time on Caraiva. Whether it’s helping you arrange a trip to the nearby waterfall or taking you to a restaurant for dinner, their passion for the area is evident. The location is also excellent, with just a short walk to the beach and river area.
Caraiva can be reached by bus, taxi or private transfer, depending on the route chosen. Either way, the first stop is in Arraial d’Ajuda, where you’ll need to cross the Caraiva River by canoe. Uber is an option, but you run the risk of the driver refusing to travel this far or charging a high price due to ferry expenses and return costs without a passenger.
If you’re planning to take a bus, we recommend that you make reservations in advance as the buses tend to fill up quickly. The company that operates the buses is Aguia Azul, and each one costs around R$ 16.
